The not-so-empty nest |
There is currently much debate in Australia
– and internationally – about housing design and housing policy. |
|
When the kids grew up and left home, mom and dad could expand their activities in the family home or even consider trading it in for a flat or townhouse – or even moving into a retirement village. But what's happening to spoil this vision? Junior is not leaving home or if he is, he may move back just when you've redecorated his bedroom. Young couples are living with their parents to save for a deposit. The prices of housing in the capital cities, in particular, mean that most young people not longer dream of owning a home of their own. Further, many older people have full-time care of a grandchild so that the parents can both work to save for their own home.
What does this trend mean for the design of housing and especially of retirement housing? Because the home is our primary environment and suitable and good housing can have a huge impact on mental health and happiness, we need to understand this trend. Urban planner Dr Wendy Sarkissian, a housing expert with Australian and international experience, explains the range of issues related to the "not-so-empty nest" and what it means for the design of housing today and into the future. |
